The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set to benefit from the revised Metro Line 5 and its extension Line 5A, which will connect Kapurbawdi in Thane to Ulhasnagar. Initially approved in 2017, the project has evolved from a 24.9-km line with 17 stations to a 34.2-km network with 19 stations, at a cost of ₹18,130.55 crore (approximately $2.2 billion USD). The new design addresses previous challenges, including land constraints, by incorporating an underground section to avoid the demolition of the Bhiwandi Bypass Flyover. This will help ease congestion in one of the region's busiest areas. Additionally, the project introduces a double-decker structure between Ranjanoli Junction and Durgadi, optimizing space in a densely populated area. The first phase, connecting Thane and Bhiwandi, is nearing completion and is expected to open by the end of 2026. With the integration of the metro into existing transport networks, commuters will have a more reliable travel option, significantly improving connectivity in areas that previously lacked mass rapid transit systems.
