Tensions have surged in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, following the assault of a man belonging to a minority community. The incident occurred when he was found with a woman from another community in a hotel, leading to his public humiliation by alleged members of a right-wing organization. They assaulted him, smeared cow dung on him, and paraded him through the streets. In response, the police have arrested six individuals, including a minor, and issued prohibitory orders to maintain order. The police registered a case under Section 299 of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses actions intended to outrage religious feelings. Protests erupted outside the Bhopal Police Commissioner’s office, with community leaders demanding swift justice and warning of larger protests if their demands are not met. Political figures, including Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi, have called for the application of the National Security Act against the accused, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar assured that any negligence by police personnel in handling the matter would be addressed.
