The University of Alabama (UA) has announced the establishment of the School of Data Science, set to open in 2027. This marks the first specialized data science school in Alabama, aimed at advancing education and workforce development in the field of data science and artificial intelligence. UA President Peter Mohler emphasized the initiative's role in making UA a national leader in data-driven research and innovation. The school will offer certificate programs, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees, with faculty specializing in areas such as quantum computing and cybersecurity. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of data literacy and ethical considerations in their fields. The announcement was made at the High Performance Computing and Data Center, a 40,000-square-foot facility with a budget of $96 million, designed to support academic research and industry partnerships. Additionally, UA will introduce an 'AI Experience' course this fall, aimed at teaching responsible AI use. Mohler highlighted the importance of understanding both the benefits and challenges of AI in various sectors, including nursing and law.
