The Uttar Pradesh Government has announced the rollback of mandatory prepaid smart meters, impacting around 75 lakh (7.5 million) electricity consumers. The shift back to a postpaid billing system means users will no longer need to recharge their meters in advance. Instead, bills will be generated monthly based on actual usage, with a payment window of 15 days after billing. Smart meters will still be installed for new connections but will operate in postpaid mode, eliminating issues like sudden disconnections due to low balance. Consumers will receive their bills digitally via SMS and WhatsApp, and those with outstanding dues until April 30 can pay in up to 10 instalments. The government has also committed to improving service delivery and grievance redressal mechanisms.
