In 2024, Chandigarh, India, reported a 14.2% increase in convictions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). City courts convicted 185 individuals in fresh POCSO cases, up from 162 in 2023. Of these, 148 convictions were for aggravated sexual assault, while 37 involved other forms of sexual assault. However, the acquittal rate remained significant, with 314 cases resulting in the accused being cleared. Inspector General of Police Pushpendra Kumar credited the improved conviction rate to a shift towards scientific investigations and enhanced coordination with prosecutors, emphasizing the importance of time-bound probes and victim support throughout trials. Legal experts highlighted that DNA evidence has transformed the landscape, allowing for convictions even when victims become hostile. Additionally, a child-sensitive approach from the judiciary and police, along with faster trials in special POCSO courts, has contributed to maintaining the consistency of child witness testimonies. The NCRB data also indicated a rise in convictions for crimes against women, with 118 convictions in 2024, marking an 8.2% increase from the previous year.
