On May 12, 2026, the Madhya Pradesh Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) following the assault of Arif Khan, a 27-year-old resident of Jahangirabad, Bhopal, by members of the Bajrang Dal. The attack, which occurred on May 10, was captured in viral videos showing the activists entering a hotel room, dragging Khan out, and physically assaulting him while chanting slogans. They accused him of being involved in 'love jihad,' a term used by right-wing groups to describe alleged efforts by Muslim men to lure Hindu women. Despite initial reluctance from the victims to file a complaint, subsequent complaints led to the police taking action. The police are currently investigating the incident and reviewing video evidence to identify the assailants. In response, local lawyer Deepak Bundele has approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), advocating for accountability and prevention of similar incidents in the future, citing violations of fundamental rights. Khan reportedly has five pending criminal cases, including fraud and theft.
