The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action against Tip and Toe Luxe, a salon located in Bandra, Mumbai, for allegedly spray-painting a live banyan tree outside its premises. The BMC's showcause notice cites violations of the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, and directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The notice claims that the salon hired individuals to spray-paint the tree's trunk and aerial roots in pink and green, which can obstruct the tree's respiration and lead to its long-term damage or death. The BMC has mandated that the salon undertake corrective measures at its own expense and submit a compliance report. Additionally, the BMC has requested the Bandra police to file an FIR against the salon's owners for environmental vandalism, which is considered a cognizable offense under the Tree Act, punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a fine of up to ₹1 lakh (approximately $1,200 USD) for each tree damaged. The police are expected to record statements from BMC officials as part of the investigation.
