The Irrigation and Flood Control Department in Delhi has reported that over 57% of desilting work on major drains has been completed ahead of the monsoon season. As of now, desilting at 76 drains has reached 57.68%, with 1.65 million cubic metres of silt removed from a target of 2.86 million cubic metres. Notably, 21 priority drains have exceeded 76% completion, indicating significant progress in areas prone to flooding. Delhi minister Parvesh Verma emphasized the importance of timely execution, stating that efforts are being closely monitored and that both manpower and machinery have been reinforced. The Najafgarh drain system has recorded nearly 48% completion, while the remaining 55 drains have achieved over 63% progress. The department is also enhancing its mechanical capabilities through a ₹94 crore procurement plan, which includes 38 specialized machines to improve efficiency. So far, 12 machines have been procured, with additional orders placed. Officials have been instructed to ensure proper disposal of silt to prevent backflow into drains, and regular inspections are being conducted to maintain progress and quality standards. This annual desilting is crucial for mitigating waterlogging during the monsoon, although past reports have raised concerns about delays and uneven progress.
