Western Railway is preparing to launch 15-car local train services on the Virar-Dahanu route in Mumbai, marking a significant upgrade from the current 12-car operations. This initiative will convert 17 existing trains, with 8 specifically assigned to the new route, while the remaining 9 will continue to operate between Churchgate and Virar. The introduction of longer trains is expected to ease overcrowding for commuters traveling through rapidly growing areas such as Vasai and Palghar, particularly during peak hours. Railway officials have noted a steady increase in ridership in these suburbs, necessitating this upgrade. The new services are anticipated to improve passenger capacity and operational efficiency. Currently, two new 15-car rakes are undergoing trials at the Virar car shed, with the upgraded services expected to be operational later this month. Palghar MP Hemant Savara has been a vocal advocate for this expansion, emphasizing its potential to enhance commuter experience by reducing congestion.
