The Supreme Court of India has expressed serious concerns regarding the practice of police using 'stock witnesses' in numerous cases, which undermines the integrity of investigations and trials. In an order dated March 19, Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R Mahadevan expanded a previously established seven-member committee, now chaired by Justice Vivek Agarwal of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. The committee includes additional legal experts and police officials, with a mandate to develop a standard procedure for witness inclusion to restore confidence in the justice system. The court highlighted that stock witnesses, often used to support police claims, can compromise the fairness of trials, particularly in sensitive cases such as those involving narcotics and corruption. The committee is tasked with completing its work and submitting a report within a month, addressing the systemic issue raised by an application from lawyer Asad Ali Warsi concerning numerous FIRs filed at a single police station in Indore.
