In a significant administrative reshuffle, the Punjab government has appointed Sharad Satya Chauhan, a 1992-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, as the chief director of the Vigilance Bureau. This appointment comes as the government submitted a list of 14 senior IPS officers to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the selection of the next director general of police (DGP) in Punjab. Chauhan, the senior-most officer currently serving in Punjab, is expected to bolster the position of the incumbent DGP Gaurav Yadav. He replaces PK Sinha, a 1994-batch officer, who will serve as officer on special duty (OSD) for law and order until April 30, after which he will assume the role of special DGP for law and order. The reshuffle also sees Arun Pal Singh, a 1997-batch officer, appointed as managing director of the Punjab Police Housing Corporation in Mohali. The panel submitted to UPSC includes top contenders from various batches, reflecting a long-awaited response to the commission's reminders regarding the DGP appointment, which has faced delays due to legislative changes. The Punjab Police (Amendment) Bill, which allows for a state-level committee to appoint the DGP, is currently awaiting Presidential assent.
