The Public Works Department (PWD) of New Delhi has commenced repair work and trial runs for the long-defunct inclined lift system at the Signature Bridge. This initiative aims to evaluate the technical feasibility and safety of the lifts, which were intended to transport visitors to a viewing gallery atop the bridge's pylon. PWD minister Parvesh Verma stated that a detailed report on the lift's condition and viability will be submitted within weeks. The inclined lift was initially designed as a key feature for tourism, offering panoramic views of the Yamuna River and the city skyline, but it has never been opened to the public due to regulatory hurdles. Earlier, the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) faced challenges in obtaining necessary permissions, as regulations only allowed for vertical lifts. The PWD has now taken over maintenance responsibilities and is conducting a broader review of the bridge's infrastructure, which includes a comprehensive structural audit and a long-term maintenance plan. The Signature Bridge, which cost over โน1,500 crore (approximately $180 million USD), serves as a vital traffic corridor in northeast Delhi, yet many of its planned features remain non-operational.
