The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has mandated an investigation into the Vikas Nagar slum fire that occurred on April 15, 2023, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. The court directed the additional chief secretary of the Public Works Department (PWD) to report on encroachments on PWD land related to the incident. The court also called for responses from the state’s relief commissioner and local officials by May 13, 2023. The inquiry aims to understand how encroachments persisted on government land and the officials' roles in preventing such incidents. This order follows a public interest litigation filed by local lawyer Anurag Tripathi, who emphasized the need for immediate rehabilitation for the fire victims, including medical aid, food supplies, and temporary housing. The court has scheduled the next hearing for May 13 to review the findings and proposed remedial measures.
