Air India announced on Wednesday the temporary suspension of six international routes from June through August 2026, citing elevated aviation fuel prices and ongoing airspace restrictions. The affected routes include Delhi–Chicago, Mumbai–New York, Delhi–Shanghai, Chennai–Singapore, Mumbai–Dhaka, and Delhi–Malé. Despite these suspensions, Air India will continue operating over 1,200 international flights monthly, maintaining significant services to various regions, including 33 weekly flights to North America and 47 to Europe. The airline attributed the decision to the commercial viability challenges posed by high jet fuel costs, which have surged by 63% for international operations compared to pre-Iran conflict levels. This situation is exacerbated by longer flight times due to airspace restrictions, particularly over Iran and Pakistan. In response to the cancellations, Air India will assist affected passengers with rebooking, complimentary date changes, or refunds. The airline is also implementing cost-control measures, including postponing salary increments, as it seeks to navigate these operational challenges while searching for a new CEO after Campbell Wilson's resignation in April.

The suspension of these routes may lead to increased travel costs and limited options for passengers planning international travel during the summer months.
