The Andhra Pradesh Forest Department, in collaboration with the Eastern Ghats Wildlife Society, has launched a conservation status survey for the Peacock Tarantula (Poecilotheria metallica) in the Nagarjunasagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has emphasized the need to protect this critically endangered species, which is endemic to a small region of the Eastern Ghats and is considered one of the world's most unique arachnids. The tarantula, known for its distinct blue hue that darkens with age, plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by preying on various insects, thus preventing potential outbreaks. Conservationist Indrajeet Ghorpade points out that the species is currently threatened by habitat loss, degradation, and illegal pet trade. He stresses that each species, including the Peacock Tarantula, is vital for the health of its ecosystem, and losing one can negatively impact many others. The conservation initiative aims to secure the future of this rare jewel of the Eastern Ghats.
