The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that rainfall in May will be above normal, exceeding 110% of the long-period average. This forecast comes after a month of near-normal rains in April, which helped mitigate prolonged heatwaves. The first western disturbance is expected to bring rain to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and surrounding areas from May 2 to May 6. However, the IMD warns that temperatures are likely to peak during the second week of May and again from May 22 to 28, leading to heatwaves in several regions, particularly in Northwest India. States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and coastal states like Tamil Nadu and Odisha are on high alert for increased heatwave days, with many areas already experiencing temperatures exceeding 40-45°C. The IMD also noted that night temperatures are rising due to climate change. Additionally, the potential formation of the El Nino phenomenon in July could adversely affect the monsoon season, as it is associated with droughts and reduced rainfall in India. The IMD plans to release its monsoon forecast in mid-May.
