A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California San Diego provides a comprehensive analysis of school-based online surveillance companies. These firms, which offer services such as social media and communication monitoring, are found to monitor students around the clock, both during and outside of school hours. The research highlights that 86% of these companies engage in 24/7 monitoring, with 71% using artificial intelligence to flag potentially concerning behavior, while only 43% utilize human oversight. Alarmingly, 29% of these companies generate risk scores based on students' online activities, raising significant privacy and equity concerns. The study also notes that many companies collect sensitive information, including private messages and search histories, yet provide little transparency regarding their algorithms and data handling practices. The findings suggest a pressing need for further investigation into how these monitoring systems are implemented and their implications for student privacy and safety.
