On Monday, the Supreme Court of India reiterated that girls should not have to drop out of school due to insufficient access to sanitary napkins. A Bench led by Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan directed the Union government to effectively implement its January 30 ruling, which mandated the provision of free sanitary napkins and adequate menstrual hygiene facilities in schools across the country. The Court emphasized that this initiative is crucial for the education of young girls, preventing them from being forced into domestic work due to menstrual hygiene issues. The Supreme Court plans to review the implementation of its directives every three months and has instructed the Union government to submit regular compliance reports. The Additional Solicitor General informed the Court that efforts have been mobilized by States and Union Territories following the ruling, with inter-ministerial meetings held to ensure adherence to the guidelines. The Court highlighted that access to menstrual hygiene is fundamental to living with dignity and aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding menstruation for schoolgirls.
