Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam's caretaker chief minister, is scheduled to meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on Sunday at 11:15 am to formally stake his claim to form the state government. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has achieved a significant victory in the recent elections, securing 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, enabling the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to continue its governance for a third consecutive term. Sarma is expected to be appointed for a second term as chief minister, with the oath-taking ceremony planned for May 12. The BJP emerged as the leading party with 82 seats, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), each won 10 seats. Prior to his meeting with the Governor, Sarma met with Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Haryana's Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who are acting as the BJP's central observer and co-observer in Assam, respectively. Sarma had previously submitted his resignation to the Governor in accordance with constitutional protocol.
