The recent induction of Ashok Kirtania, a prominent leader from the Matua community and BJP MLA from Bongaon North, into the West Bengal Cabinet highlights his growing influence in the region. Kirtania, who has been a significant figure since his election in 2021, aims to restore voting rights for constituents whose names were removed from electoral rolls during a controversial revision process. He won his seat in 2021 by defeating the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Shyamal Roy by 10,488 votes and retained it in 2026 with a remarkable margin of 40,670 votes, securing 56.46% of the total vote share. After taking the oath, Kirtania pledged to address the issue of deleted voters, stating that he would ensure those affected would regain their rights. He also urged members of the Matua community to apply for citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), reinforcing his commitment to their inclusion in the electoral process. Kirtania expressed a collaborative spirit, stating his intention to work alongside other ministers to achieve the vision of a prosperous 'Shonar Bangla' as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
