On Thursday evening, a leisure cruise capsized at Bargi Dam on the Narmada River in Jabalpur district, Madhya Pradesh, leading to at least nine deaths and multiple missing persons. The boat, carrying approximately 30-40 passengers, overturned due to sudden storms with wind speeds reaching 60-70 km/h. Eyewitnesses reported that passengers had warned the crew about worsening weather conditions, but their pleas went unheeded. Survivors claimed that life jackets were either distributed too late or were insufficient, forcing passengers to scramble for safety as the boat sank. Local residents were among the first responders, rescuing several individuals. The incident has prompted state officials to announce a compensation of ₹4 lakh (approximately $4,800 USD) for the families of the deceased and to initiate a government inquiry into safety protocols and crew conduct. Bargi Dam is a popular tourist destination located about 40 km from Jabalpur.
