In a recent statement, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stressed the necessity for all residents in the state to learn the Marathi language, while firmly opposing any form of violence or discrimination based on linguistic identity. This declaration was made during a media interaction at Hutatma Chowk on Maharashtra Day, amid escalating tensions following the government's decision to require non-Marathi-speaking rickshaw drivers to acquire proficiency in Marathi. Protests from rickshaw unions prompted the government to extend the compliance deadline until August. Political tensions intensified when Raj Thackeray, leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), criticized the government for its leniency towards non-compliant drivers, suggesting immediate revocation of their permits. In response, Fadnavis reaffirmed Maharashtra's inclusive ethos, stating that the state has never supported exclusion based on language or migration status. He condemned the aggressive tactics often associated with the MNS and highlighted the beauty of the Marathi language as one that can be learned peacefully. Fadnavis also paid tribute to the contributions of workers on International Labour Day, emphasizing the importance of labor in building the state and the nation.
