In a significant case of identity fraud, four individuals have been arrested in Gujarat for operating a criminal syndicate that used advanced artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. The gang, identified as Kanubhai Parmar, Ashish Valand, Mohammad Kaif Patel, and Deep Gupta, allegedly bypassed biometric security systems to execute their scheme. They acquired personal data of victims and employed AI platforms like Gemini AI and Meta AI to create high-quality deepfake videos that mimicked 'eye-blink' animations. These videos were projected during official verification processes, deceiving liveness detection protocols and enabling the gang to change mobile numbers linked to victims' Aadhaar profiles via Common Service Center (CSC) kits. This breach allowed them to gain control over sensitive digital platforms, including DigiLocker and various banking services. With the linked mobile numbers altered, the accused received one-time passwords (OTPs) on their devices, facilitating the opening of fraudulent bank accounts at institutions such as IDFC, Kotak Mahindra, and Jio Payments Bank. They also applied for personal loans through multiple lending services, resulting in significant financial burdens for the victims. The accused, who have diverse educational backgrounds, are currently in judicial custody as investigations continue. In response to this growing threat, the Ahmedabad Police have initiated an Aadhaar security awareness campaign, advising the public to lock their biometric data using the mAadhaar app or the UIDAI website and to follow safety protocols to protect against identity theft.
