The Election Commission of India (ECI) has commenced Phase III of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, targeting 367.3 million electors across 16 states and three Union Territories. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar emphasized the importance of participation in this phase, which aims to ensure that only eligible voters are included in the electoral rolls. Excluded from this phase are Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, due to ongoing Census operations and adverse weather conditions in snow-bound areas. The ECI plans to announce a separate schedule for these regions after the completion of Phase II of the Census.
A total of 3.94 lakh booth level officers (BLOs) will engage in house-to-house visits to facilitate the revision, supported by 3.42 lakh booth level agents (BLAs) appointed by political parties. Maharashtra leads with the highest deployment of 97,924 BLOs, covering 98.6 million electors, followed by Karnataka with 59,050 BLOs for 5.55 crore electors. The revision process will unfold in seven tranches from late May through December, with the first tranche starting on May 30 and the final electoral roll publication scheduled for various dates, including September 6 for Odisha and December 23 for Tripura.
