The Madras High Court in Chennai has directed the Tamil Nadu government to address the implementation of the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) following a petition from four retired state government employees. The petitioners, R. Nandagopal, M. Kumar, N. Punniyamoorthy, and R. Lakshmi Narayanan, argued that they were appointed after the April 1, 2003 cut-off for the old pension scheme, thus falling under the Contributory Pension Scheme. They retired before TAPS is set to take effect on January 1, 2026, and are entitled to a special compassionate pension based on their service length as per a government order. Justice P.T. Asha has given the government eight weeks to respond to the plea, which highlights the necessity for operational guidelines to ensure the scheme's implementation.
