The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), effective upon his assumption of charge. He will also serve as Secretary in the Department of Military Affairs, succeeding General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure ends on May 30, 2026.

The Government of India has officially appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), effective from the date he assumes charge. Lt Gen Subramani will also take on the role of Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs. He succeeds the current CDS, General Anil Chauhan, who is set to complete his tenure on May 30, 2026. Lt Gen Subramani currently serves as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat, a position he has held since September 1, 2025. His prior roles include serving as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, and as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army’s Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.
