Chandigarh's administration is transitioning from manual vehicle inspections to an Automated Testing Station (ATS) at Raipur Kalan, which is expected to be operational by August. This facility will utilize automated, sensor-based systems to conduct fitness tests for commercial vehicles, enhancing transparency and accuracy while reducing human error and corruption associated with traditional methods. Currently, Chandigarh has approximately 30,000 registered commercial vehicles that require periodic fitness certification. The ATS will assess critical parameters such as brake efficiency, suspension, steering alignment, and emission levels. This initiative aligns with the Indian government's broader push to standardize vehicle fitness testing across the country. In addition to the ATS, the UT transport department plans to establish a regional driving training centre at Raipur Kalan, which will provide structured training programs for drivers and improve road safety standards.
