The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has called for a comprehensive response from the Uttarakhand government regarding pollution issues affecting Nainital Lake, a key ecological and tourist site in Uttarakhand, India. The tribunal's principal bench, led by Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member A Senthil Vel, found the government's previous affidavit lacking in detail about ongoing or planned projects to address environmental concerns. The case stems from a petition filed by Hemant Singh Gonia and others, who highlighted the discharge of untreated sewage, garbage, and plastic waste into the lake through a drain from Bhotia Market. This pollution threatens aquatic life and the quality of drinking water for local residents. The tribunal has given the state authorities two months to submit a detailed response outlining remediation measures. Additionally, the Uttarakhand State Wetland Authority stated that Nainital Lake does not qualify as a wetland under existing regulations, complicating the situation further. The tribunal will reconvene on July 14 to continue the proceedings.
