The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that Odisha will experience rainfall and thunderstorms in the upcoming days, which is expected to provide relief from the oppressive heat currently affecting the region. On April 28, Jharsuguda recorded a staggering 45.3 degrees Celsius, marking the second-highest temperature for April. In response to the sweltering conditions, IMD has issued a yellow warning for hot and humid weather. The forecast indicates that widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (40-60 km/h) are likely, particularly in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Northeast India. Authorities are urging residents to take precautions, such as remaining indoors during storms and avoiding open areas during lightning. Additionally, the Union Health Secretary has advised states to prepare for heatwaves by establishing Heat Stroke Management Units and ensuring timely warnings and reporting of heatstroke cases.
