A special court in Mumbai has denied Indrani Mukerjea's request to travel to Spain and the United Kingdom for two weeks, citing her status as a 'flight risk' amid ongoing proceedings in the Sheena Bora murder case. Special judge J P Darekar noted that the trial is at a critical stage, with few witnesses left to be examined. Mukerjea, a UK national, argued that she faces 'severe financial hardship' due to dormant bank accounts in both countries, claiming she needs to reactivate them and update her will. However, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed her plea, stating she did not demonstrate any compelling circumstances for her travel. The court highlighted that despite her claims of financial distress, she had deposited ₹2 lakh (approximately $2,400 USD) in court to seek travel permission. This is not the first time Mukerjea has sought to travel abroad; previous requests have been denied by both the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court, which cited the ongoing trial and the risk of her not returning. Mukerjea was arrested in August 2015 after the murder of her daughter, Sheena Bora, was uncovered, and the case has been under investigation for over a decade.
