India's ambition for high-speed rail has encountered significant barriers, primarily due to outdated track infrastructure. While the Indian Railways is developing new trainsets capable of speeds up to 200 kmph, most of the existing broad-gauge network is limited to just 130 kmph. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai is working on specialized trainsets designed for 220 kmph, with a contract awarded for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. However, the Vande Bharat Express trains, which can reach 160 kmph, have been unable to operate at full capacity since their launch in February 2019 due to track limitations. A high-speed test track is being constructed in Rajasthan, expected to be completed by mid-2026, which will allow for safer high-speed trials. Despite a four-fold increase in upgraded tracks over the past decade, experts warn that the disconnect between train technology and infrastructure poses a significant risk. Without synchronized improvements, India risks having a fleet of advanced trains that cannot operate at their intended speeds.
