The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police has assumed control of the investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, the outgoing Leader of Opposition. The incident occurred in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas district, just 48 hours before a significant swearing-in ceremony for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following a historic electoral victory. Rath was shot dead by a motorcycle-borne assailant while returning home from work. The driver of Rath's vehicle sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized. Evidence from the scene includes a seized vehicle with tampered number plates, which allegedly blocked Rath's car during the attack. Adhikari condemned the murder as premeditated, while BJP leaders expressed concerns about political violence in West Bengal, linking it to the state's law and order situation. Rath's family is devastated, with his mother demanding life imprisonment for the culprits, describing her son as a victim of political revenge.
