The West Bengal government, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has made a significant decision to transfer land to the Border Security Force (BSF) for the construction of a 110 km long fence along the Indo-Bangladesh border. This decision comes after more than a decade of bureaucratic delays that hindered progress on border security. The fencing project will cover nine districts, with the largest segments located in Cooch Behar (41.9 km) and Malda (31.8 km). The BSF has struggled with delays in land transfers, particularly under the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, which handed over only 2 km of land in Malda over the last three years, leaving over 31 km still with the state. The BSF's Eastern Command has expressed hope that the new government will also review police postings at border stations, as they lack investigation powers and often encounter issues with infiltrators being misidentified as Indian nationals. Adhikari has instructed his officers to complete the land transfer process within 45 days, aiming to enhance security along the 4,096.7 km India-Bangladesh border, of which West Bengal accounts for the longest stretch at 2,216.7 km.
