Charlotte Kelly, a county councillor for Leek Rural in Staffordshire, has defected from Reform UK to the Conservative Party. Elected as a Reform representative in May last year, Kelly's decision follows personal challenges within the Reform party that have influenced her political journey. She stated that her previous alignment with the Conservatives makes it her 'natural home', especially under the leadership of Kemi Badenoch. This switch strengthens the Conservative opposition group on the council to 12 members, while reducing the Reform bloc to 43 councillors. Kelly emphasized her commitment to effectively representing her constituents and working with colleagues who share her values of fairness and equality. Conservative group leader Philip White praised Kelly's dedication and local knowledge, expressing excitement about her return to the party. The Reform Party, which had a strong showing in the last election, has seen its numbers decline, with several former councillors now sitting as independents or resigning from their positions. A by-election is scheduled for the vacant Stretton seat later this month after the resignation of Reform councillor Barry Martin.
