Pawan Khera, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress party, appeared for a second day of questioning by Assam Police in Guwahati, following a 12-hour interrogation regarding allegations of presenting forged documents against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Khera is accused of claiming that Sarma possesses three passports and various offshore assets. After leaving the Crime Branch office, Khera expressed his commitment to cooperating with the investigation but refrained from commenting on the lengthy questioning process. He indicated he would return to the office the next day to submit additional documents.
Support for Khera came from Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi, who visited the Crime Branch office and criticized the FIR against Khera as an attempt to stifle discussions on alleged illegal wealth associated with the Chief Minister's family. Gogoi accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using central investigative agencies to target opposition leaders and activists rather than addressing corruption within its ranks. Additionally, the Congress party raised issues pertinent to Assam, including the delay in granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to certain communities and the completion of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process.
The Congress party also took aim at the BJP's proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), alleging that it promotes divisive politics under the guise of uniformity, warning that its implementation could undermine traditional customs and legal protections for Scheduled Tribes across India.
