Apple Inc. is taking steps to diversify its chip production, moving away from sole reliance on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). According to Ming Chi-Kuo, a prominent analyst known for his insights on Apple, the tech giant has initiated testing of legacy silicon chip production with Intel using the 18A-P process. This process is comparable to TSMC's technology utilized for Apple's A18 Pro chip. The chips being tested are primarily low-end models intended for use in iPhones, iPads, and Macs, with an estimated 80% of production allocated for iPhones. Currently, Apple and Intel are conducting small-scale tests throughout this year, with intentions to ramp up production significantly by 2027 and 2028. However, the plan also includes a gradual reduction in production capacity by 2029. While Apple is exploring Intel's more advanced process nodes, TSMC will continue to be the dominant supplier, accounting for approximately 90% of all Apple Silicon chips supplied.
