A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Chandigarh has framed charges against advocate Jatin Salwan from the Punjab and Haryana High Court and his associate Satnam Singh for allegedly accepting a ₹30 lakh (approximately $36,000 USD) bribe. The charges are based on accusations that they attempted to influence a judicial officer in Bathinda, Punjab, regarding a matrimonial dispute. The case originated in August 2025 when the CBI arrested Salwan following a complaint from Harsimranjit Singh, who alleged that Salwan demanded the bribe to secure a favorable ruling. During a sting operation on August 14, 2025, Satnam Singh was reportedly caught accepting part of the bribe on Salwan's behalf. Despite the defense's claims that the funds were legitimate professional fees, the CBI maintains that the demand was linked to corrupt influence over the judiciary. Both accused were present in court, pleaded not guilty, and have been remanded to judicial custody. The court has adjourned the matter to May 18, 2026, for the commencement of prosecution evidence.
