The Delhi government has launched a city-wide plantation drive targeting the planting of over 7 million trees and shrubs as part of its Green Action Plan 2026-27. Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that the initiative will involve educational institutions, resident welfare associations (RWAs), and religious bodies to enhance the capital's green cover and combat air pollution. A meeting attended by representatives from over 20 institutions, including IIT Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia, highlighted the collaborative effort required for this mass movement. Over 800,000 individuals are being encouraged to plant trees in honor of their mothers and for 'Mother Nature,' with free saplings provided by the forest department and civic bodies. The campaign aims not just at planting but also at ensuring long-term care for the trees. Activities are planned for July to coincide with the monsoon season, improving survival rates. The government will utilize geo-fencing to track each planted tree and create a dedicated portal for real-time updates. Additionally, Green Awards will recognize institutions and individuals for their efforts in tree maintenance, embedding environmental responsibility within communities.
