The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has praised the Indian government's initiative to establish a ₹10,000 crore (approximately $1.2 billion USD) Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price stabilisation fund. Hemant Mistry, IATA's Director of Energy Transition, emphasized that this fund is a crucial step to protect domestic airlines from the ongoing fuel cost crisis. Jet fuel prices have increased dramatically, from an average of $96 per barrel in November to $188 in April, before settling around $156. This volatility has forced airlines like IndiGo and Air India to temporarily reduce their flight operations, a situation termed 'demand destruction' by Mistry. He stated that the fund would provide necessary support to scheduled Indian airlines, enhancing their operational viability amidst rising fuel expenses. IATA, which represents more than 370 airlines including major Indian carriers, urges governments to recognize the industry's challenges and implement supportive policies. Sheldon Hee, IATA's Regional Vice President for Asia Pacific, echoed the sentiment, stressing the importance of government support for maintaining connectivity across cities in India.
