Mexico has officially decided to retain its full academic calendar for the 2025-26 school year, concluding on July 15, 2026, despite earlier proposals to shorten it due to the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. The proposal to end the school year early, suggested by Education Secretary Mario Delgado, aimed to address concerns about extreme summer temperatures and logistical pressures during the tournament. However, it faced strong opposition from parents and education experts, leading to its withdrawal. President Claudia Sheinbaum called for consultations with stakeholders to ensure a consensus decision. Following discussions, education officials confirmed that the academic calendar would remain unchanged, providing clarity for families. Nonetheless, adjustments may be made by local authorities in response to exceptional circumstances, such as severe heatwaves. Sheinbaum reassured the public of Mexico's preparedness for the World Cup, including security measures and infrastructure readiness.
