Maharashtra has become the first Indian state to implement the Bharat Forecast System, a cutting-edge weather forecasting tool developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune. This system provides localized weather forecasts every three hours, significantly improving disaster preparedness for weather-related events.
- 01The Bharat Forecast System offers detailed forecasts for areas as small as 6 km x 6 km, improving upon the previous 12 km x 12 km forecasts.
- 02Weather updates will include precipitation, temperature extremes, atmospheric pressure, wind conditions, and cloud cover.
- 03The system will enhance disaster preparedness for events like heat waves, heavy rains, and floods, according to government officials.
- 04A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority and IITM to facilitate this initiative.
- 05The BharatFS will be integrated into the decision-making processes of local administrations through the State Emergency Operations Centre.

Maharashtra has set a precedent as the first state in India to adopt the Bharat Forecast System, an advanced weather forecasting technology developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune. This innovative system is capable of generating precise weather forecasts for localized areas measuring 6 km x 6 km, a significant enhancement over the previous 12 km x 12 km forecasts. With updates provided every three hours, the Bharat Forecast System will deliver critical information on precipitation, maximum and minimum temperatures, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, and cloud cover in near real time. The Maharashtra State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has formalized its collaboration with IITM through a memorandum of understanding, aiming to bolster the state's disaster preparedness and response capabilities, particularly for weather-related disasters such as heavy rainfall and heat waves. The implementation of BharatFS will be facilitated by the State Emergency Operations Centre and will empower local administrations with scientific weather data to improve decision-making processes. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis noted that the impacts of El Nino are expected to be more pronounced in regions like West Vidarbha and Marathwada.
