On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched two innovative weather forecasting services, including an AI-enabled monsoon advance forecasting system. This system will provide updates on seasonal rainfall and localized weather information up to four weeks in advance, specifically designed to assist farmers across 16 states and over 3,000 sub-districts. A pilot project in Uttar Pradesh will offer high-resolution rainfall forecasts at a 1-km resolution for up to 10 days using advanced observational networks and artificial intelligence techniques. The new forecasting products will be disseminated through mobile applications, SMS alerts, WhatsApp, and displayed in local markets, ensuring farmers receive timely information for better decision-making regarding sowing, irrigation, and crop protection. Union minister of earth sciences Jitendra Singh emphasized the transition to impact-based forecasting, which delivers precise, location-specific, and actionable insights. The systems were developed collaboratively by the IMD, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, responding to the increasing demand for localized weather forecasts.
