On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) launched two innovative weather forecasting services, including an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered system designed to predict monsoon rainfall patterns and provide localized weather updates. This initiative is expected to support farmers across 16 states and 3,000 sub-districts by offering forecasts up to four weeks in advance. The first product focuses on monitoring the monsoon's advance and providing region-specific weather information, enabling farmers to plan agricultural activities such as sowing and irrigation more effectively. The second service, currently a pilot project in Uttar Pradesh, offers high-resolution rainfall forecasts at a 1-kilometer spatial resolution for up to 10 days ahead. These systems utilize data from various sources, including Automatic Weather Stations and Doppler Weather Radars, to enhance forecasting accuracy. Union Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh emphasized that these advancements represent a significant shift towards impact-based forecasting, benefiting sectors like agriculture, urban planning, and disaster preparedness. The IMD collaborated with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting to develop these systems, responding to the growing demand for precise weather forecasts.
