The recent local body elections in Gujarat resulted in a decisive victory for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which secured approximately 75% of the seats across nearly 10,000 local bodies, an improvement of nearly four percentage points from the previous elections in 2021. The Congress party managed to claim a significant win in the Khadia ward of Ahmedabad, a BJP bastion since 1972, marking a notable upset. The victory rally in Khadia was particularly historic as it saw the election of its first Muslim corporator, Mohammad Ilyaskhan Pathan. BJP leaders attributed the loss to changing demographics and internal dissent, noting that around 3,000 loyal voters did not participate in the elections. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made some gains in tribal regions, notably winning several taluka panchayats in Narmada district, but overall, its vote share declined from 13.91% in 2021 to 10.27%. The elections were also significant as they were the first held after a substantial revision of the electoral rolls, which saw over 68 lakh voters removed, and followed an increase in Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation from 10% to 27%. The BJP's organizational strength and effective booth management were credited for their sustained success, as they prepare for the upcoming Assembly elections in December 2024.
