Following the establishment of five new districts in the Ladakh region, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil, under Chief Executive Councillor Dr. Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, has called for immediate district status for the Sankoo sub-division and Shakar Chiktan Shargole sub-division in Kargil district, India. Dr. Akhoon expressed disappointment over their exclusion from the recent notification, stating that both sub-divisions are significant due to their population density and developmental needs. He highlighted that Kargil district, with 80 villages, has a larger population compared to Leh district, which has 40 villages. This discrepancy indicates a need for greater administrative focus on Kargil. Akhoon has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena to take action on this matter. MP Hanifa Jan echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of these areas in Ladakh's governance and development. He expressed hope that the demand for district status will be fulfilled soon, reinforcing the community's long-standing aspirations.
