Ashok Kharat, a self-styled godman, was remanded to 14 days of magisterial custody by the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) PR Phulari in Rahata, Ahilyanagar district, India. The Shirdi police had requested additional police remand, citing Kharat's lack of cooperation in investigations regarding his wife’s whereabouts, who is currently absconding. Kharat is implicated in a cheating case involving a local farmer, Raosaheb Gondkar, who accused Kharat and his associates of fraudulently taking possession of his 4 acres of land worth ₹10 crore. Kharat has been in custody since May 4, and his wife Kalpana has not been arrested despite a court rejecting her anticipatory bail plea on April 23. Following the court's decision, Kharat was sent back to Nashik Central Jail and will remain in custody until May 16, as investigations continue into multiple allegations against him, including sexual exploitation.
