India's total power consumption increased by 4.04% to 153.99 billion units (BU) in April 2026, compared to 148.01 BU in April 2025. This growth occurred despite a dip in demand during the first half of the month due to unseasonal rains, which kept temperatures lower and reduced the use of cooling appliances. However, as temperatures rose, particularly in the latter part of April, peak power demand surged to a record 256.11 GW, up from 235.32 GW in the same month last year. The peak demand had previously reached 250 GW in May 2024. The Ministry of Power anticipates that peak demand could reach 270 GW in the summer of 2026. Experts suggest that power consumption will continue to rise as the India Meteorological Department predicts a harsh summer, with heat wave conditions expected to persist until the monsoon arrives, typically around June 1.
