The Indian government is currently testing a new emergency alert system that aims to enhance communication during critical situations. Conducted by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in partnership with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), this trial involves sending Cell Broadcast alerts to all mobile phones within a specified geographic area. Unlike standard text messages, these alerts can reach numerous devices simultaneously, ensuring efficient communication without straining telecom networks. The technology is intended for use during emergencies such as tsunamis, earthquakes, severe weather events, and man-made disasters like gas leaks. During the trial, users may receive alerts in Hindi, English, or other regional languages. The government has emphasized that there is no need for panic or immediate action upon receiving these alerts, as they are part of a performance and reliability assessment before the system's official launch.
