The Gomti Barrage in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, is set to adopt a digitally monitored and automated system through the implementation of SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) technology. This initiative, directed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, aims to modernize the barrage operations to enhance flood management and improve the drinking water supply for the city. The SCADA system will facilitate real-time monitoring of water levels and automate the control of barrage gates, allowing for quicker responses to emergencies, particularly during monsoon season when river discharge can rise suddenly.
Constructed between 1980 and 1983, the barrage is crucial for maintaining the water supply to the Kudia Ghat pumping station, which serves millions of residents. The existing vertical gates have suffered from corrosion over time, prompting the government to replace all ten gates in phases. Two gates were replaced in 2024, with four more scheduled for 2025. To ensure uninterrupted water supply during this replacement process, a cofferdam has been built upstream of the barrage. A 45-day shutdown for ongoing repair and installation work is planned from May 8 to June 15, with engineering teams working diligently to complete the project before summer water level fluctuations pose operational challenges.
