The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has identified significant shortcomings in its waste management system across its 12 administrative zones. To address these issues, the MCD plans to invest ₹47 crore in hiring 194 trucks, 163 auto tippers, and various other garbage collection equipment. The South zone will receive the largest share of this budget, with ₹10.64 crore allocated for new equipment, including 21 auto tippers and 100 garbage bins. The West and Central zones will receive ₹7.35 crore and ₹4.25 crore, respectively. The sanitation problems are largely due to the expiration of contracts with private concessionaires, leading to garbage accumulation in several areas. Newly elected mayor Pravesh Wahi announced plans to procure additional machinery worth ₹50 crore to tackle these issues and ensure timely waste collection. The MCD aims to fill gaps in existing agreements, particularly in areas not covered by current contracts, such as transportation of silt and construction waste.
